Make a Clay Creature!

Do you want a hands on, fun way to spend a few hours with the creative people in your life? Well this is the way to go.  I got my idea from a kit that I found at Jo-Ann Fabrics, but you can go and buy your own clay somewhere else too.

The rating on this craft is duo which
we defined as . . .  Just like duo is a simple word that isn't hard to sound out or spell, this craft is pretty straight-forward, although it may take a few extra minutes and another trip to the craft store.

What you will need . . .
  • Clay in many different colors ( I used air dry but I would recommend some kind you can bake (I always use Scupley) if at all possible )
  • Butter Knife or Clay Knife
  • Glue (optional)
  • Paper Plates
  • Ziploc bags ( the same amount as how many clay colors you have)
  • Googly eyes ( optional )
  • Key Rings ( optional-you can make it into key charm if you want but you don't have to )
  • Printer Paper
  • Markers or Colored pencils
  • Creative Mind

How to . . .

1.) Doodle! Draw images of want you want to make. Whether it's real or something you made up, it is always good to know kind of what you want to make. Keep in mind that no idea is a bad idea!

2.) Pick which doodle you want to make.

3.) Get your sculpting area set up. To do this put Ziploc bags under each package of clay. Get paper plates for each person to work on with their doodled page next to them.  Get any other tools you plan to use near by.

4.) Play with your clay until it is soft and easy to work with.

5.) Start to form your creature. I started with my body but you can start whereever you want.

6.) To do the arms and legs you can set small chunks of clay out by where you want them attached to your creature.

7.) Work with the arms and legs and form them and then attach them to the body.

8.) Make your head, ears ( if any ), face and any thing else you might want.

9.) Attach key ring if you have one.

10.) Put some glue to make sure that it stays in place.

11.) Let the air dry clay dry for at lest 24 hour. If you are working with bake clay then bake it according to the package.

12.) Clean up after yourself. If you used paper plates you should have a quick job.

13.) If you want to take this craft to another step you can write stories about your  new creature!

14.) Enjoy your completed charm!

Tip: If you don't want to buy as many colors of clay you can mix the colors and make different ones.
